My firm is looking for a summer law clerk, 1L or 2L. It's an interesting area of law. It's a paid position and it says so in the ad (25 bucks an hour, though it doesn't give the amount). I've posted on symplicity at five law schools and gotten like three applications.

Is there some sort of seismic shift in the law-school student hiring market where every student has a biglaw summer associate position? What am I doing wrong here? This seems like a solid gig on paper.

This is just an assumption, but my alum recently switched from Symplicity to another hiring platform, yet the Symplicity interface is still active, making it look as if Symplicity is still the platform they use. I'm assuming they are letting their last few months or so with Symplicity run out of its subscription. Granted, I have no idea how it works.. Perhaps the schools you've utilized have the same problem and are using another platform? Just a suggestion.

I had no idea some schools were moving off symplicity. As far as I know, my school isn't one of them and I have an ad posted up there. Maybe I'll call career services at the respective schools. I've kind of made it my mission to find our ideal intern. I was an intern here and got hired.

I've never understood the logic behind this weird custom. Why not just put the pay in the ad?

You know, that's a good question and I didn't think much about it. Maybe to separate the people who have genuine interest and talent from the ones who just need booze and weed money?

Anyway, I got another resume finally. This one is from a person with almost straight A's in their first semester of law school. Impressive.

Edit: Though left to my own devices, if the decision were up to me I'd just pick the person who I thought would be the most fun to work with.

the person with straight As is only throwing an app your way as a safety. I knew someone who got CBs from Cravath, Wachtell and Skadden on the first day of OCI, but was still applying like crazy to every job listing out there

Yeah definitely put the pay in the ad.

Whenever I saw these off simplicity and they said "paid" but didn't include the amount, I assumed it was some minimum wage gig and never sent an application.

I remember applying for this firm for my 3L year and it just said "law clerk," not even whether it was paid or unpaid. I assumed it was paid and I wouldn't have worked here if it weren't, but when they told me it was 25 and hour I nearly crapped myself in excitement.

Yeah, $25/hour isn't decent pay for a summer intern. Leaving it off is a red flag that just makes people think it's some minimum wage job.

Well no one's told me its 25/hr, I should probably make sure before I start putting it on ads. I assume they'd pay another intern what they paid me.

Looks good to me.

What's your area of law and you should include the pay in the ad.

Also what region are you in? I'm curious to see what Law schools you're aiming this at.

NYC area, targeting the typical NYC area schools. Niche area, don't want to out myself, though I'm sure some Dome residents have already figured it out.

Definitely sounds like there might be something odd going on. I would think you'd have dozens of applications. You might try contacting the career services people at a few of your target schools and asking them.

Just had a similar experience. I emailed career services at my 4th tier "school" and asked them to run an add on their simplicity and better yet, send me a few good resumes, as I was in the market for a first year (starting salary $80k with benefits and an articulated bonus structure in a real mid-sized firm). This is the sort of job that comes along once every few years for grads of this school. Wouldn't ya know it, not a single application. Granted, the school is 2 to 3 hours from the office that we were hiring in, but still; not a single resume. I was dumbfounded.

Ultimately hired someone from another school and that person seems to be working out. But how absurd.

It sounds like the word not getting out. I would have applied if it was an area that I was vaguely interested in. I did a family law internship early on. Good internship as it goes hand in hand with many dv cases.

I had a similar experience when I posted an advertisement for a new associate at the local T4 law school. This school has about 120 grads per class, and about half of them graduate unemployed. I posted an ad for a full-time associate and got only 3 resumes.

I missing something? Last year I hired a summer 1L for criminal law work - got an amazing student at like $11 an hour.

This year I went back on symplicity and posted the same position. Little slower on applicants this year, but I again expect no problem ultimately hiring someone at that same range. $25/hour sounds bonkers to me for a clerk and you don't need to read more than a handful of posts on this site to know attorneys would cut off a pinkie 8 days a week for $25 an hour post-graduation (apparently).
