After having two interviews with a competitive federal agency in January, I was supposedly the "selected candidate" for an attorney position. I provided references and was told that the agency just needed to cut through red tape. It's possible there were other "selected candidates," but I have no knowledge of that. This process was rushed just before the federal hiring freeze was put in place, and I did not hear from the agency despite repeated emails in the week before the new administration entered office. The position has since opened up again (or at least an additional version of it), and I applied again. I have not gotten a response and the posting closed two weeks ago. I am posting below the exchanges I had with the hiring manager and would like to get your responses as to whether I should keep pushing this.

All fed jobs get hundreds of applications unless they are limited to 50 applications. If they want to hire you, they'll hire you. The best strategy with fed jobs is just to apply again and move onto the next application instead of dwelling.

You may think you have developed a cozy relationship with them, but they may don't think about you. You must be very young. Just move on, you never developed any good connection in that agency.

They don't remember/care about you. You should stop emailing your previous point of contact and instead focus on the new posting.

Anyway, many federal agencies are dealing with
1. End of fiscal year,
2. Hiring freeze, or
3. 13-month background investigation for cleared positions.

Also, are you sure of your eagerness to potentially become cube mates with a flatulent, unfireable federal employee?

DECEMBER 21--A federal employee was formally reprimanded this month for excessive workplace flatulence, a sanction that was delivered to him in a five-page letter that actually included a log of representative dates and times when he was recorded “releasing the awful and unpleasant odor” in his Baltimore office.

The numbers game:
Last year, I was at a federal agency which received 600 applications for two attorney positions.
This year I was at a federal agency that got 450 applications for one attorney opening.

Hopefully, these sample numbers provide help to your perspective.


Perhaps balance out your day at the horse race track $2 window excitement. ...

That is really not bad. I have heard some get 1000+! That is why it is best to apply and move onto the next app. If you have a 1/300 shot of getting an interview or best case scenario 1/50, why dwell?

Seriously? I got a job at SSA. I am probably overqualified. Most of my coworkers in my training were probably overqualified for an ostensibly entry level GS-11 job. That is the pool of applicants. People on an ALJ register applying for GS-11 jobs getting rejected.

How does the fiscal year end consideration work exactly? I applied for an SSA position and was told when I was called for an interview that they would be hiring by the end of the month b/c of fiscal year end, but I haven't received an offer but keep getting asked about submitting documents, last one being a couple days ago.
In my mind, the feds have a budget for an employee salary and want someone to start as soon as the new fiscal year begins so they can use all the money in the account. Is that how this works? It seems like if they don't have the new hire start for a couple weeks into the new year, it wouldn't be a huge loss.
