I have a job. It's even a good job. But, it's litigation, which it turns out I don't love. I think I can get a district court clerkship. My thinking is that I can move from clerkship to a position that is less litigation-centric, and not at a firm. I'm about four years out of law school. Stupid to leave job for clerkship, as opposed to stay at job and look for jobs that are more attractive?

If you are in a position that you are not truly enjoying, then absolutely take the clerkship--it looks solid on a resume and can translate into all types of opportunities. Sometimes, the opportunity may simply come because your Judge knows someone at an agency or firm and makes a quick call on your behalf. You have instant credibility.

My understanding is that you do clerkships so that you can do litigation. Clerkships have little relevance to transactiona work (other than that there prestige)

It's a bit of a career reset, so it depends how far you are along. However, a District Court Clerkship is certainly a step up if you're a regular shmoe, so I don't think it will hurt.

I think if you're set on shifting practice areas, there are worse moves and this would give you a much higher profile for other places looking for young attorneys. Take a leap if you have a decent safety net, IMHO.

Funny, I'm in a clerkship because I didn't like T&E work and want to transition to litigation.
