I don't post much, but some regulars here may remember my story. Started my own firm right out of law school during the recession, and basically ended up being a family law attorney by default/demand. Things were hard at first (20K salary in year one, 30K salary in year two), but I've made about 75K salary the last few years, working for myself and not having to work very hard.

Well, I just got an offer from a successful family law firm in my town which I've had several cases against over the years. They offered me a job - 100K salary and billing based bonuses that could let me make another 50K per year if I hit the targets (so 150K total).

After much thought, I've decided to take the offer. I will lose my freedom and name on the door, and I will have to work harder. But I can make a lot more money, and I'm still relatively young and willing to work hard. If there are any updates (e.g. the job sucks and I am miserable), then I'll let you know.

Congratulations! As a hedge, make sure the clients you will represent have your personal cell phone number. That way, they can reach you and refer clients to you even if/when you leave the firm.

Thanks, Jeff. I don't give family law crazies my personal cell phone number, but I am keeping my old firm number alive and will have it push calls to my cell. I'm also keeping my web site and other stuff for awhile, just in case things don't work out. But I hope they do!

Congrats! The best part is that there is next to no risk for you. If you hate it, you can just tell them, "thank you, but this just isn't working," then pick up where you left off as a solo.

That being said, I hope it works out for you!

Thanks, I agree with your analysis, that's a big part of the reason why I decided to give the new place a try.

Hey there, mayne. We never met up for that beer. Are you going to be working in the city proper now?

If so, let's meet up sometime.

Hope the family is good.

Ahoy there Captain, yeah I had two kids and flaked out on the beer. My family is doing great, thanks.

I'll still be working in a lesser city.

However, I've got a big night out with 2 of my friends planned for April 21, and we'll be getting hammered and going to various dive bars in the city proper (probably north end). If you want to grab some drinks on the 21st, let me know.

I saw in the dome that you are gonna knock up your wife soon. Good luck and congrats!

Yeah. I'm trying. Figured it's now or never on the kid front. I'm closer to the North End anyway. So you'll probably be in my hood. I think you still have my throwaway. So email me privately and let me know.

I don't get too rowdy in my own backyard, so probably won't make any dome worthy stories out of it! HAHA

yeah, i'll look for your throwaway and try to send you a message. I think we will be one or two neighborhoods over from you, and we will be taking ubers, so maybe you can get rowdy outside your hood.

Thanks! Took me lots of years of investing in myself, but it's starting to pay off. If I had not graduated into a recession, I probably would have gotten to this level a lot sooner. Oh well, looking forward.

The good thing about taking a job with a family law firm is that if you later decide you don't want to work there, it's fairly easy to leave and take clients with you and go back to solo.
