It's 36 miles away. It will take me an hour to get there, as long as traffic is good. That will be difficult. Does anyone have a long commute like that? I would probably sell my house if I get the job, but I can't move until February.
The position is contracts administrator for my a state university. Does anyone have a job like this? What exactly do you do in this position?

I used to have a long commute like that many years ago. Try it out. If you don't like the job, stay in your current home. If, over time, you feel sure you will be at the new job for a long term, then you might look to sell your home. Selling homes costs a lot. It shouldn't be done lightly.

I think 36 miles for an hour is not bad. It is really when you have like 10 miles and then an hour commute that it’s miserable. I have had commutes that ranged from like 45 minutes to 90 minutes to go around 20 miles and when it got to 90 minutes, I really wanted to slit my wrists. Luckily, the people I know who work at universities tend to say that they’re pretty flexible in terms of work hours. Unfortunately I don’t know anyone in that job, though.

I did this commute for about 8 months. It was miserable. By train its better, but while driving it sucks, and eats at you badly in terms of time available to relax and your psyche. If its temporary and you are gonna move closer in less than a year, its doable. I just know I was 100% living for the weekend while doing that. I had to leave my house by 6:45 and came home no earlier than 8.

Yeah. I would move somewhat closer, but I refuse to live on the south side of town. It would be a permanent position though, and I could get health care.
The Army has a couple of contracts specialist positions open too. Those would be close to my house if I could get one of those.
I'm miserable where I am and need to get out of here if I can find anything.
My supervisor's assistant told my main supervisor that I was complaining about the sexual harassment from my other supervisor. She confronted me about it today. I know she's not going to do anything about it, and I wasn't really prepared to report it. She kept asking me if anybody else saw these things happening and when they happened. So I'm kindof mad.

That’s not a bad commute. I’d say normal for any major city. If you’re miserable try it. It sounds unlikely to involve long hours. It could be a position where you could flex your hours (come early, leave early) or with some work from home.

I’ve done 1.5 each way for 2 years. Most miserable time of my life although the job rarely required overtime. But my friends who commuted 2 hours were fine with it - so your mileage may differ.

Anything more than a half hour each way is a lot, at least for me. With a two hour commute you're looking at a minimum 10 or 11 hour workday, everyday. I agree with the suggestion that you try explaining that you are very interested in the position but worried about the commute, and ask if you can work from home two days a week.

45 minutes each way for me (give or take), car b/c I live in an area with limited mass transit. It kind of sucks. However, I’m very tied in to where I live and it’s a solid job, so it is what it is. You should take the job and see how it goes.
