For those who (1) can't find a job, (2) have a job and are working in the legal field, (3) have quit the legal field and are working in a different industry, or (4) are going back to school either b/c you can't find work or you hate the legal field, where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

I am going back to school (paying out of pocket, no loans). I hope to have a decent job w/ good benefits 5 years from now and have enough $ saved up to buy a house. I have 30K in debt from law school and I hope most of that is paid off by then. Law consumed 5 years of my life (3 years of LS, 1 year of employment, 1 year of unemployment). I refuse to let it consume anymore.

I have more modest ambitions -- just emperor of the known shitlaw world is enough for me. I plan to practice shitlaw until I die in the middle of a cattle call in Kings Civil at the ripe old age of 109. If the gods are merciful they will give me the biggest stroke ever such that I relieve myself all over the benches and the floor -- though there are plenty of days already where the place stinks of piss so I doubt anyone would notice my contribution.

I hope to be living in a high-rise condo, owning a brand new Jeep Wrangler (I have an '08 right now)along with my completely re-vamped 300ZX, and dating two or three hot girls(not married with kids). I hope to still be at my current job making considerably more money and have considerably less debt. I don't think those desires are far fetched at all. And I expect to still be in top shape.

Either I'll go back for yet another b.a. or, maybe, I'll go on to graduate school. I would like to study ants so maybe I can get into the entomology program at Texas A&M.

I'm (2) but I work part time. In five years I hope to be working full time as an attorney in a non profit or government setting, or have some sort of non-attorney non profit or government job that pays okay money. But, I have no idea what the future holds. I have two little kids so it is actually good to only be working part time. I think the main reason I've been trying to find full time work is because this economy makes me feel panicked. But, I am starting to feel like it is a waste of time right now to look for full time work, and I should just concentrate on doing a good job with my part time job and my kids and husband. In five years my kids will be a lot bigger and it will be a lot easier to work full time. I am not really hurting for money thanks to having no student loans and my husband's income.

Good idea, Frida. Your kids are only little for a short time and you won't want to miss those precious years slaving away as a full-time attorney. If money isn't a problem, there's no rush to get f-t employment.

That is what everyone has been telling me for the last few years, including my husband. I am just paranoid about the economy and my long term employment opportunities, but at least being underemployed for me has some advantages. For many people being underemployed just sucks - I am lucky there is a silver lining. I would be more comfortable if we were saving more, but my husband (like a typical person who really has not been effected by the economy) still acts like it is business as usual here in the USA.

Hopefully out of the profession doing something business / real estate related. It's been a good run, I learned a lot, and I think I can do many more things than I could otherwise. However, the relative pay to work ratio of law sucks, plus the profession is extremely regulated.

My goal is to do 5 - 7 years and then leave.

I am thinking of leaving my job in about a year, hopefully making a step up in life. I am not sure about kids, but most likely not. I hope to be living in a house and married to my gf.
That's really all. Or my career is screwed and I find myself on the doc review circuit.
I also have had a crazy increase in gray hairs, but I am not bald, and don't think i'll be balding till i am pretty old. But I may a "touch of gray" look going on in 5 years, which I am not in favor of.

I'm (2). Currently I'm a law clerk hoping to get hired as an associate in a litigation oriented practice area (I was previously an associate at an estate planning firm; just didn't like that area of law so left it). In 5 years I'll be 38. Hopefully I'll be a senior associate at a respectable firm and a significant chunk of my student loan debt will be paid off. Alternatively, I'll be a millionaire/billionaire CEO of a new social media website. In any case, in my free time I expect to continue developing my gaming and programming skills, and to continue hitting the gym.
