I was wondering if anyone on here had any experience working or interning at the NJPD. I want to be a public defender and was offered a 2L internship there. I am choosing between there and some of the NY public defender orgs and would be grateful for any info on working or interning in NJ.

Thanks

Hey- never interned at Ny defender orgs but interned at njpd. You should shoot for a busy county to get the most bang for your buck.

I did my 2L summer at the OPD in South Jersey. You'll get good experience writing, researching and you'll get a fair amount of court time arguing motions. Definitely worthwhile for the experience.

I interned with the n j p d. it was in a busy, crime-ridden city so there was plenty of work. As a rising 3L I got to argue hearings in crim and fam courts, met all sorts of nutty defendants (drug dealers, gang members, child molestors, wife beaters, burglars... the works basically). Experienced the process from beginning to end, and even got to meet a guy on trial who chopped up his family, stuffed their body parts into garbage bags, and dropped them off on the curb like was garbage day. Plus the trials are somewhat fun to sit in on if you enjoy shit like Street Justice and Judge Mathis.

All in all it was a pretty enriching experience.

Does anyone have any insight into the interview process for NJPD? I got a callback last spring, but had to cancel because I landed a clerkship.

A really good friend of mine I clerked with interviewed there. It's a state office (vs the prosecutors which are county offices), so I believe you go to trenton to interview. I heard they were hiring, but they're very busy.

I think you go in and have to give an opening and/or closing argument. I think there is a second interview with the State PD (the head of the place) which is more of a normalized final interview. The salaries are higher than the similar prosecutor gigs in the county you're placed in. They are also very busy

For the hypos do you have to know NJ-specific criminal law and procedure? I am only familiar with PA/federal crim law and procedure.
