The concensus seems to be that if you can't get them to hide your profile, the only thing you can do is get the website to work in your favor by utilizing it as a low cost form of advertising. Has anyone done this? Other tips for dealing with Avvo?

Avvo is just a game. I don't know why people are so terrified of it. You don't need to be an established attorney with a great reputation to get a good rating -- all you have to do is fill out your profile. I think I spent about an hour on mine and my rating shot up. Will it actually generate business? I doubt it. However, it is one of the first things that come up when someone Googles you. You don't want a bad rating to scare someone away.

I'm a brand new licensed attorney and Avvo automatically assigned me a 5.0 rating when I have no negative record, so screw them, and their rep has the audacity to call me every single day and leave a voicemail expecting me to sign up for their $150/month service. I've had potential clients call back and tell me my 5.0 rating concerned them. I've completely filled out my profile as well and I'm stuck on Page 28 with the disciplined attorneys.

I've gotten a few calls and ignored them. They taper off quickly. I haven't paid a dime.

I can't imagine you've fully filled out your profile with that rating. That's the rating I received at first and it jumped quickly as I filled the profile out. Do you have client and attorney reviews? You don't have to keep doing this crap. It's just a matter of getting it done up front.

I would never claim it. Yes, it is a game, but you have to play by their rules. I personally don't have the time to play their game.

I work for the government now, so take what I say with a green assault.

When I worked in private practice I got a couple new clients per month from Avvo. We never paid for it, but my 10 rating put me on the top of any search in the area for Family Law/Divorce. Avvo is a great tool to bring in clients. Most clients today are substantially more sophisticated then in the past and will use Avvo, Yelp, Google Reviews etc. when choosing an attorney. Having a great review sites really can make your business.

The negative part is that to other posters points you have no control of it. If you have a disgruntled client then he can sink your business with one horrific review. Knowing this you become some what like a door mat to clients. It makes screening them at consult that more important.

Does anyone have experience with creating your own website and trying to use SEO (search engine optimization) to "drown out" an Avvo profile?

I found that Tigershark Studios is definitely worth a look. They offer all aspects of law firm marketing. They also do celebrity endorsed TV Ads. I know they market for every type of law, give them a call if your legal marketing needs some help.

I highly recommend them to any law firm.
