I just saw the issues regarding attorneys' fees was recently resolved and they claim there's no estimated distribution date on proceeds. (I hope it's not like some stupid book of barbri coupons.)

Thanks! I went through my emails regarding this case. My claim was filed in June 2013! Hoping for a few hundred, but not holding my breath...

Can someone provide a brief summary of what Barbri supposedly did wrong here?

I haven't followed this at all.

I once got a class action notice re Barbri.
The settlement was a discount coupon on you guessed it, another state's bar review.

Looks like the gist of the case is Barbri made a deal with Kaplan so that Kaplan got LSAT prep, which is 1300, and Barbri got the more lucrative full service bar course, 6000, which it says Barbri enforced by "a variety of means". What does that mean, did Conviser himself negotiate the deal?

"BAR/BRI provides full service bar review courses throughout the United States aimed at assisting would-be attorneys to prepare to take one or more of the bar examinations that are required by each state and the District of Columbia before an attorney obtains a license to practice law. Plaintiffs alleged that BAR/BRI violated federal antitrust laws by agreeing with Kaplan to limit competition in the market for full service bar review courses. West was the owner of BAR/BRI during the relevant period and is a Defendant for that reason. The other Defendant is Kaplan. Plaintiffs alleged that BAR/BRI agreed not to compete in the LSAT business and that Kaplan agreed not to compete in the bar review business, thereby allocating to BAR/BRI the market for full-service bar review courses in the United States and preventing a competitive bar review course from being marketed and sold.

Plaintiffs also alleged that BAR/BRI unlawfully acquired and maintained a monopoly in the market for full service bar review courses in the United States and also conspired to monopolize that market, all through a variety of means"

Normally the motion for final approval will state whether the administrator needs court approval to disburse. Is there a claims process or are they using data to automatically send out the coupons?

The FAQ provides some info about the claims process. https://www.gilardi.com/barbrisettlement/faq.html#8. They got a $9.5 million settlement, which will have fees and expenses deducted, and then distributed to class members based on a ratio of what they paid to Barbri. Pretty sure I paid Barbri just under $3,000.

I don’t want to sound ungrateful, but honestly how long can the law firm hold onto these funds before distributing them to the class members? Everything was resolved as of January 11, 2018. Can they just hold onto the funds indefinitely and not provide any time frame to class members regarding when they might get their funds?

The claim form was due 5 years ago. I often see examples of administrators honoring late claims, but never more than a year.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear. I timely submitted my claim back in 2013. I am a class member. Class counsel had two or three appeals over issues unrelated to the merits of the case. However, the appeals have now all been resolved as of January 11, 2018 (after 5 years), and the only apparent matter left is distributing the settlement funds. I’m wondering if or when I get my portion of the settlement.

According to the settlement agreement, class counsel needs to file a distribution order with the court and the funds will be disbursed after said order is approved. The order has not been filed yet. If you submitted a valid claim form, you should get payment and if there was an issue with your form, the administrator should have given you an opportunity to cure it.

The agreement doesn't say you get back coupons. It should be cash. It's rare that price-fixing/antitrust settlements result in coupons - it's normally cash.

This is why they should pass a law that prevents class counsel from getting paid before class members.
