Is it as crazy extensive as everybody purports it to be? I find it hard to believe that a state bar has the funds and time to conduct a thorough investigation on every applicant. I've heard from some people that it really only conducts thorough ones on those with red flags from basic background checks or self-reported information.

Most people have very simple C&F. A K-JD who didn’t move around a lot and didn’t ever get in real trouble doesn’t take a lot of effort.

But if you’ve got a broader file, yeah it can be tough.

Having gone through C&F in 4 states, the thoroughness varies, as does the hoops they make you go through.

They’re mainly looking for thoroughness and candor. The big issues are moral terpitude and character issues.
Cheating, lying, scamming, fraud, dishonesty, and psychiatric issues are the main problems

I knew a kid who didn't report academic misconduct in undergrad. He was given a verbal warning by his undergrad (No paper trail or marks on his transcript/record)...idk how C&F found it.

Plagerism, admittedly he got off light with a verbal warning, could rewrite the paper, and took a C.

My honest advice if its academic misconduct. Disclose. You'll get called into an interview, just admit what you did, no excuse. They will probably ask for a letter or contact your professor.

No one has been denied C&F for academic misconduct unless they don't disclose.

Mine was nonacademic misconduct. I know I def should disclose...Do you know if it's common for people who fail c&f on their first try due to lack of candor to pass on their second try? I really don't want to be hundreds of k in debt and not pass the bar.

I'm not sure but if you fail and have to appeal in court whatever you did will be public. You can read some cases online if you want.

Just disclose, I don't think New York is the most difficult state unlike Florida.

Ask your school if you can amend you application. I know people have done it post graduation.

Lack of candor will result in being SOL. If it’s something they’ll find, disclose and be contrite. Don’t recreate the wheel. Most of it is just scare tactics. Focus on passing the BAR.

You can’t be delinquent in any of your accounts. The bar will make you pay those accounts off before you pass c and f.

No. U need good faith repayment. Ull be fine. Just get on a payment plan per what u can afford. 50 a month works.

Tell em everything that is responsive to their question. Amend law school records to reflect everything so when c&f compares the two they don't see discrepancies. Be honest, own up to whatever failures you've had, and you'll be fine.

when in doubt, disclose

The biggest problem for C&F is failing to disclose something.
With just a handful of exceptions, nothing will disqualify you from getting admitted (though they may ask you to jump through a few more hoops).

Just disclose things that a record exists of somewhere or there is official documentation. There are few things which will actually prevent you from being barred. Failing to disclose (discoverable) negative facts is one of them.

If you owe money than get on a payment plan.

If you did time in rehab than get a copy of your discharge papers and prepare to talk about how you've changed.

If you've committed minor crimes than get certified dispos and letters from friends/family about how you've changed. And be prepared to talk about how you're a different person now.

The formula is own up to whatever you did (and they can prove you did!), get a copy of the records for them, and then prove how you've changed.
