Any thoughts on how long a "public trust" background check takes for an attorney position with the federal government?

About 6 mos. And I even started my fed. Atty job before results of background test were final. I worked there for about 3 months before I got word I passed. Seriously, I thought it odd they offered me the job and start date then said continued employment conditional on passing background. But I needed the job so took it anyway. Thankfully I passed. I was worried some bad debt issues in my past would trip me up so sweated those 3 months but
worked out.

That seems awfully long for a standard attorney job. So the good news is one might be able to start the job sooner while the check is still pending?

I started while my secret clearance was pending. You’ll be fine. My secret took 10 months before completion.

My position requires Secret clearance. That's why it took so long, and yes, I started and worked 3 mos. before got clearance and passed background. I was reluctant to leave old job pending clearance for fear if I didnt get it I'd be unemployed. I asked to stay in my old job till received clearance but they said no,.if I couldn't start by X date they'd give the job to another candidate. So I reluctantly started here without knowing if I'd pass background and get the clearance. But my bad debt issues didn't trip me up, I got the clearance and glad I took the gamble and left the old job. I like it here.
