I was at a charity function a few weeks ago. I met Dave, an analyst at a bank. We were talking for a while and he asked me what I do. I gave him a basic rundown of my job profile. He then asked: "why didn't you become a divorce lawyer?"

Dave's question was matter-of-fact and totally honest.

I was at first taken aback. I got those suggestions when my career started and was sitting in the grimy basement doing doc review. Now that I've moved on, no one mentions family law to me.

Dave, you must be joking, though your tone of voice suggested that you thought it was a normal question. Lawyers in small towns handled all real estate, divorce, criminal, and commercial litigation matters. As the world has become more sophisticated, so has the practice of law. Not sure why Dave, an analyst at a bank, has not figured that out.

He probably got divorced and spent what he believes is a lot of money on his lawyer.
