And what sort of message does this send to women thinking of a career in law? Does it suggest that the legal profession is a welcoming place for women?

Women now outnumber men in American law schools (like most higher education fields), so this should not be a surprise. I did find it amusing that the firm's associate "class" is a total of 8 lawyers, so we are not exactly talking biglaw here.

A female coworker asked me a few days ago what can be done about the nationwide gender pay gap. I answered “just wait.”

The gender pay gap is a simple fix.

When you examine apples-to-apples jobs, with apples-to-apples incumbency, and apples-to-apples hours worked per year, it goes "poof" into the ether.

Put another way, if an employer could get the exact same work output by hiring all of one gender and pay them 80% of what they'd have to pay the other gender, they'd be nuts not to do so. Cutting labor rates by 20% versus your competition would be the Midas Touch.

Are law firms paying women less? I thought female lawyers make less money because they work government and other lower paying jobs more than men.

Fettywap:

Assuming you are correct (you probably are), is it because

A) women self select lower paying, but probably higher quality of life, jobs

B) they have spouses/significant others with higher paying jobs

C) they go to law school with less debt and are more free to take less paying jobs - see (A)

D) are cool with paying law school debt off for eternity

E) some combo of above

F) something else?

If that's true (I don't know it is), women will continue to have a wealth gap (not necessarily a pay gap). If men take less debt they will be richer sooner over time. Especially considering undergrad debt in addition to law school debt.

Hopefully JD = Mrs degree.

Put aside the obvious virtue signaling going on here. This firm normally hires about half men and half women. Now, it's all women.

Were they intentionally discriminating against men??
