This was my first week hired in a fairly well-known firm. I am honestly surprised at how "un-PC" it is in certain ways and especially in comparison to other companies. The attorneys are on the younger side and everyone is surprisingly very nice/approachable, including the senior partners.

The office manager is crazy, but that's OK. I am getting a lot more calls lately about legal jobs. Thanks to all those on here who advised about doc review. I thought I was going to start doc review, but instead I am doing something completely unrelated (for the time being). That gives me time to prepare in case I do get assigned to do doc review.

Y'all not taking into account it might be a lot less stressful working as a paralegal or general gopher or whatever OP's doing vs. working as a billing attorney.

Could be 5 months from now he'll see it as just as friendly as this week.

Yes -- I work in a "Senior Paralegal" position and the pay is not bad for what I do and considering I have ZERO experience in this particular law field (I won't mention which one for privacy reasons).

I do get paid hourly, so I am free from the abuse/constraints faced by the salaried employees or attorneys. The environment seems very collegiate and like I said before, "un-PC" relative to similar firms and age groups. I can be a very abrasive/hater cynical type and everyone seems to just "accept" it so far. I have developed "favorite" vs least liked attorneys...so I am slower with helping those out with their billing or admin tasks. The irony in all this is that in some instances I actually have more of a say than they do, because many firms now force lawyers to share one paralegal and if said paralegal is on very good terms with the senior partners, well, no further comment.

legalbeagle: I was actually told today that everyone gets lied to in my firm...but I'm OK with that because that's what I assumed it was from the beginning. I never expect a firm to be real honest with their employees. I'll give you credit though - now that it's been 3 weeks, I do think that most employees don't seem to like each other...they all come to me being critical of someone else. At times, I feel like a confessor.

"they all come to me being critical of someone else... a confessor"

Just guessing but likely "I can be a very abrasive/hater cynical type and everyone seems to just "accept" it" engendered the above.

If you'd instead maintained a clinically professional attitude, I doubt this would be happening.

Oh, and sooner or later the passive-aggressive crap you're pulling will bite you in the behind. But you've been around the block and should know this already.

dalocummelioribus (Jan 4, 2019 - 7:51 am)

Not so much because everyone just talks bad about each other openly...except that they add extra details when they tell me. One thing though - I'm not passive aggressive. I'm very much in your face straight up mean or nice depending on how much I like you. Put another way, if I don't like you, you'll know real fast.

Work "slowdowns" against peeps you don't like suggests passive-aggressive to me rather than being "in their face" about it, but I guess ymmv.

Passive/aggressive AND openly hostile. Keep it up and at some point you will do that to the wrong person and not only will you be given a box for you to clean out your stuff but you may be handed your own ass. Lol.

Some people say they love working with me because they find my bluntness refreshing, others say that I'm rude/too blunt. I don't give a crap either way. Here's the thing though: I am on very good terms with management and that's honestly all I care about. They know I do this and in fact laugh when I make a comment on it.

The reason for this is that (I don't want to sound arrogant) but I actually have WAY more experience when it comes to all the bureaucracy than the newbies and know how to get things moving fast filing in the courts, etc. So if I don't think your work is of priority to who really matters in the firm, I don't give it priority. They are more interested in sales here/getting clients than in whether or not newbie attorneys get priority from me.

Nope, not passive/aggressive - very active and aggressive when needed, sweet as pie when it suits me.

Have a good day.

Arrogant? Not at all. If you read my resume though, which I encourage anyone to do, you will see that it's not a question of me being arrogant but rather, being very much qualified to do the job I do. Indeed, if I could have you sit with me, going page by page by page of my lengthy resume, you wouldn't call me arrogant. You'd call me a real pro and would want to hire me. You would also see from my professional references that they would say excellent things about me...such as hardworking, punctual, educated, knowledgeable in what I do and most importantly, QUALIFIED for my age. You call that arrogance? I call it cred.
