because she needs to earn money to pay for an LLM program (that he used to direct). Man, law professors are just shameless.

What's the issue? If this refugee is competent and you have a need then hire. If not, do not hire.

I am sure foreign llm is just as good as a domestic jd and has less student loans. It's a win, win for everyone.

I should mention that I am a solo attorney. So 'hiring' a clearly unqualified candidate for which he knows that I have no need, is basically asking me for charity. Charity that will ultimately benefit the law prof's employer more than anyone else in this scenario. This professor is trying to 'help' this asylum seeker by encouraging her to take on massive debt and guilting me into spending thousands of dollars for help that I don't need and quite frankly cannot afford. I am partly unwilling to hire any help because I myself am in the process of paying off my student loans; the same loans that paid for this professor's salary and his 9 month european sabbatical. Yeah, I am salty and bitter.

The scam is his way of life, so this ridiculous request is perfectly reasonable in his mind. You exist for a single purpose: to make his life easier. But I gotta ask: why did you stay in touch with this professor? He sounds like the very definition of entitled.

"Sorry, at this moment I have no need or cash flow for to hire somone."

Seems like a fairly innocuous request of the type people get all the time.

When I was a law clerk for a small firm 1L year, upon the request of a law prof my boss hired an undergrad and put her to do some filing, get lunch, etc for min wage 1 day a week. I dont think he needed someone but his referral based model relied on being a local community big shot.

I'm not saying you should hire this person if you dont need her, or that you are going to open the flood gates of referrals from this law prof. Only that this seems like a fairly innocuous request, where the requester expects a "no," and there's no reason for you to get so butt-hurt about it.

As far as the prof's motives to make her go into the program? Plenty of attorneys tell clients they have good cases just to milk them. As a whole, I doubt lawyers are better. Some profs are scum, some lawyers are.
