I imagine that homeless people (who are often subjected to a neverending cycle of fines just for existing, cuz they're constantly getting charged with "vagrancy" and "loitering" and whatnot) often keep money in their underwear because a wallet would just get stolen.

If someone ends up with a bench warrant because the money they were going to use to pay some fine was in their underwear, well the fact that we have these status offenses that essentially criminalize poverty is bad enough, but then we won't even take your money because it might be "dirty?" Talk about adding insult to injury. Just give the clerks some rubber gloves and hand sanitizer, sheesh.

Gov employees don't get paid enough to deal with this. If this keeps up, they will quit their jobs to obtain more lucrative private sector employment.

I don't know about you, but the clerks in my state courts get paid pretty well with great benefits to do a lot of nothing. And they don't have skill sets that would fetch them good money in the private sector (or pensions, summer hours, ridiculous vacation, great health, union representation, etc.).

Look, up and down, gov't employees are doing public service for low wages. My 2L Evidence professor never spent a day in the court room, but instead of making real money in a BIGLAW career, decided to teach us for basically the equivalent of a mere first year associate.
