My odds of winning the mega millions jackpot are higher than me even getting an interview let alone an offer for any of them and two are gs11-14 positions the other is gs14-15

I've applied to ~15 federal vacancies over the past few months. Have been referred for a handful. I had an initial phone call/screener for one vacancy about three months after I had applied for it. Was told I would be hearing from them again within a week. A week came and went. Nothing. Followed up with the person who had called me. Still nothing. I just don't get how they run things.

Nepotism is illegal at federal level... But everyone I know who got hired as a GS13+ got in via connections. Just anecdotally sayin'.

I think this is true in general- even in the private sector, jobs are posted to meet EEOC type requirements, and they may even legitimately interview folks. But the reality is connections matter.

People don’t want to go through the “trouble” of posting a job opening, it’s “hey, do you know somebody?” It’s easier to hire a so-called “known entity” rather than cast a net for strangers.

My own observation is that the good jobs, by and large, are obtained by outstanding, top-shelf experience and/or credentials or by who you know and/or being in the right place at the right time. This is true in public and private sector, and regardless of what the HR person or interviewer tells you otherwise. So tired of seeing open job postings when I knew that behind the scenes someone was already in line for the job. The run of the mill and cruddy jobs are always fair game, however.

Yeah, the key phrase seems to be "many vacancies." It's a bit cynical and I'm sure there are exceptions, but in general if it's a posting for one job for one individual, USAJobs is a waste of time because they've already got someone lined up. Particularly so for excepted service, which of course includes most attorney jobs. And even if it is within the competitive service, it will probably go to someone who is already a GS-something and/or a military veteran.

True. Another giveaway is a very short application window. If a fed. job is open for only a week or so, I don't even bother because I know they're just going through the paces to check the federal hiring law boxes.

I feel your frustration about applying for jobs on USAJobs.

I have applied for my fair share as well. That being said, I have had 5 separate interviews and two offers despite having zero connections. Both jobs were for attorney jobs starting at 90k outside of my current state.

My experiance has been that you need to have relevant experiance to have a shot and your resume must reflect that. Finally, to actually land the job, you need to interview well.

Just my two cents.

I can confirm this. I live in the most podunk area of the TX MX border, and I have been called for AUSA jobs as well as SSA jobs, but neither could get close to my private practice/O&G title money. You can get these jobs, but you have to be willing to go to BumFrick Egypt, and in the interview have a good reason you want to go to BumFrick Egypt.

LOL. Your comment reminds me of a job posting I saw about half a year ago--I think for DHS or INS. Location was in some Godforsaken hellhole out in the middle of nowhere in the NM or AZ desert, close to the US/Mexico border. Not exactly an enticing place for a single woman....:). I wonder how many apps--if any--they received.

You can bet your ass, they received a ton lol. Every single Fed attorney job gets a ton of attention, because once you are in, it is extremely easy to transfer elsewhere.

True for lots of fed employees, not even just atty. I have a friend who got a gig at the GSA doing procurement type stuff. Boring AF, like sourcing office supplies for all manner of agencies.

Went and visited him at the office one time, and no one was there but him, because literally everyone else teleworks" almost all the time, and even he only physically went in like once or twice a week.

Fast forward couple of years later, dude is with the state department getting assigned to these cool posts in weird countries all over the world. Guy said it was so much easier to get the cool stuff once the foot was in the door. Didn't seem to matter that nothing about the previous post had much of anything to do with foreign service unless you count supplying some embassy with post-it notes or whatever.
