I am in the process of starting up my own criminal shop within 90 days and am wondering if any of you solos use letters to contact potential clients who have recently been arrested. If so, has it been an effective way to market? What is your return rate?

Finally, I would be interested looking at the letter you send out.

I know the biggest complaint about sending letters is that the person gets like 30 within the first week. However, I will be in a small market where there are only 5 - 10 attorneys in a 60 mile radius.

Any other marketing thoughts for criminal law would be appreciated.

Most criminals are very poor. Focus on drug dealers, drunk drivers, and wife beaters. Otherwise you'll haggle over $499 fees with guys who were arrested trying to steal shit from Walmart

Sending letters seems to be a big waste of time, and borders on unethical solicitation. Firstly, only a small number of people arrested are in need of private counsel. Whether the person is eligible for free legal services, or they are charged with something that can be resolved rather quickly.

If there are only a few lawyers in the area, I would suggest becoming qualified to become assigned counsel. You would at least pick up a few cases that are conflicted out by the public defender or legal aid. Marketing wise I would suggest having a professional looking website, if you are seeking office space, try to find one close to the courthouse, not only for convenience but for marketing purposes. Think of it this way, if the D's girlfriend wants to hire someone, they might google attorney on their cell phone. Phones use location services, and the search results will be contingent on whos closest.

I found that Tigershark Studios is definitely worth a look. They offer all aspects of law firm marketing. They also do celebrity endorsed TV Ads. I know they market for every type of law, give them a call if your legal marketing needs some help. Plus they do not make you sign a contact. it is month to month.

I highly recommend them to any law firm.
