It's also the 4th year in a row of declines, which signals despair. 2018 was 2% lower than 2017.

By race, approximately 1% lower for hispanics, 2% lower for blacks and whites, and 3% lower for asians.

I expect the total human population to decrease in my lifetime. We are getting there on at the global level too.

I suspect the world population will not decrease - they are still pumping out kids like crazy in Sub-Saharan Africa as far as I know... But the composition of the world's population might change quite a bit. OP isn't a "racist" though, so I expect her to welcome with open arms our new overlords... so to speak.

Aren't you at least in your 40s? Short of some kind of massive pandemic or nuclear war, the population of the USA or the world will not shrink in your lifetime. That's a literal mathematical impossibility.

I'm in my mid 40s and lots of projections show total world population going flat or starting to decrease around 2040. It won't require a nuclear war or pandemic, just people having less kids.

Japan has been on the cutting edge of this, so to speak.

They have some serious labor shortages in certain fields and are quietly increasing work related immigration to compensate.

Japan was the first place to use robotics. They did it to avoid immigration.
Seems outsourcing could help with labor shortages.

This is based on 2012 data. At that time, the birth rate was expected to pick back up so projections would likely be lower on new data.
