Ethan and Tinsley prefer to rent beach houses in Bali, Negril, Phuket...
Why waste your 10000 in bar exam loans on renting an apt in some hot U.S. City?
You can hit the beach for one last vacay before adulthood beckons and study on the beach.

"Some of the most privileged law school graduates in America on the beach is apparently the way for the Gray Lady's Style section to cover the state's bar exam. Its discussion of "many" students ditching the confines of a coffee shop or library includes a couple of NYU Law graduates who "took a flight to Negril, a coastal resort town, where they rented a three-bedroom house on the beach for $3,000 for six weeks" last year and a Northwestern graduate who "headed 9,000 miles to the beach at Phuket, Thailand, where he blows off steam after 10-hour study days by practicing muay Thai, a form of kickboxing, at a local gym." A search for a Chicago-to-Phuket flight comes in at around $2,000. But both of those NYU grads, according to their professional profiles and bios, are now full-time lawyers. So it seems like the beach trip worked out for them."

I paid $150 for the previous session's BarBri books on Craigslist, sublet my place, and paid $300/month to live on a Mexican surf beach and study for the bar. Winning, won.

These 2 are actually not bad.

If you have a post-bar job lined up and can pay it back, credit card would be better than a high interest personal loan branded as a "bar loan."

THe couch surfing one is stupid, advice people to save money, but not to be homeless.

My tip would be to become the BarBri rep 1st year
Get the review for free when you graduate.
Then move home with mom and dad, bf or gf, gammy or whoever.
Don't take out extra loans on top of the loans you already have outstanding.

Just don't do barbri. Buy used PMBR CDs and problem books. Done.

Used PMBR DVDS, not CDs are a bit old now.
The bar reviews stream online, and don't use the physical content.
So you are sending people to study off old material.

superttthero (May 16, 2019 - 10:51 am)

My materials were 3-5 years old for my 1st bar test, they were about 8-10 years old for the second one.

DVDs, CDs, whatever. My point is you can do fine with used materials and used books and don't need to pay whatever BarBri costs now.

Or just skip bar prep course all together...

I just don't understand spending 3k after spending three years studying the material and spending 150k.

Something about law student types and spending money they don't have lol

superttthero (May 16, 2019 - 10:01 am)

For real. $3k? I think it's more than that.

You can spend $250 on used materials and pass. I did it in 2 states 5+ years apart. People need to stop feeding these leeches.

I was just guessing. I have no idea what they charge. I just know when the time came to take the bar, I had no money for a prep course. So I just purchased used books off jdu and studied on my own for a few weeks.

Smart. I took the loan and wasted the money. Stupid stupid me.

That being said though, it was still a better use of it than a bar prep course.

I can't even disagree with you on that... But that interest charge!!!! And likely an origination fee.

This was only loan I took out for law school. I think it was called grad plus. I borrowed like 10k, spent it all on barbri and booze, and like 2 mo rent.

I pretended to rep the bar prep company (retained 0 clients. Approached 0 other students. Just manned the table for an hour or two once a month)

But for those that don’t know, the price is negotiable. BarBri May ask for $3k+, but if you say Themis only costs $2k, they’ll price match.
Themis and Kaplan are also willing to drop the price, if asked.

Paying full price for bar prep is like paying full price for law school
